The Internals of SQL Server Transaction Log File- Facts every SQL Server Database Professional should know

Mohsin Khan, Senior Database Consultant

Transaction log or T-log, as it is often called, is a vast subject and critical for anyone working with SQL Server databases. The ability to recover a database to a certain point-in-time after a crash or failure heavily depends on how its T-log is managed. In this session we will see the internal structure of a T-log file and how it logs user transactions, its usage during database recovery operations and how it is extended because of log file auto extension. We will also discuss the concept of Write-Ahead logging or WAL, “Shrink” versus “Truncate” operations and conclude with some best practices in managing the transaction log files.

Mohsin works as a Senior Database Consultant for clients across U.S. Besides a master’s degree in Computer and Information Systems Security, he holds Microsoft and Oracle certifications namely, MCSE: Data Platform, MCSE: Business Intelligence and Oracle 11g Administrator Certified Professional. He is a cross platform Database professional who works in heterogenous database environments, mainly consisting of SQL Server and Oracle.
