Extended Events: Know the underlying structure, lifecycle and core concepts

Mohsin Khan, Senior Database Consultant

Microsoft has announced the deprecation of SQL Server Profiler for Database Engine trace capture and its replacement 'Extended Events' is now the go-to feature for diagnostic data collection. Introduced in SQL Server 2008, Extended Events have been greatly improved over time. In this session, we will see how extended events engine works, the lifecycle of event execution and the core concepts that make up the extended events architecture. We will also see how SSMS GUI can be used to create and monitor Event sessions. We will conclude with some best practices and how to migrate a profiler trace to an Extended Event session.
